Origin and History:
The annual Hack-it is not only a gathering where Italian hackers meet, but it is also an opportunity to share the interests on telematic communication open to people that want to experiment and discuss the social, technical and political use of telematic and computer instruments.
10 years after the first [Hackmeeting in Florence], hackers met in Pisa at the Centro Sociale Rebeldia, outside the city on the 28, 29 and 30 September 2007. Aware that in the past 10 years the world of hacking has changed and that «those that seemed the interests of a small group of nerds, have become the interests of everyone».
[1].
In the manifesto of Hack-it 07 hackers state: «We are all a bit hacker, no one likes the fact that Google is able to know every detail of our preferences while surfing the net, and the internet communities became indispensable to organize people work, leisure and free time.»
The 2007 event was centred on digital rights and onissues such as the choice of open source software, the opposition to the traditional logic of patents and copyright and problems linked to the work in the computer field as, for example, privacy defence and resistance to censorship.
The meeting proposes the creation of self-managed servers, the study and experimentation of clean energy sources and the research of control and security systems.
«People have understood that their on-line privacy is not a prerogative for a small group (...) hackers are not considered any longer as an anomaly linked to counter-cultures, but as subject with whom to interact to understand and improve the Internet»
Besides, Hack-it 07 wanted to face the problems raised by web 2.0. Those are the words by Bomboclat, one of the organizers: «We thought that cyberspace would have changed national laws because it would have changed people mentality and their way to relate to information. Then we reached the rough awareness that nations are trying to redefine the non-circumscribed cyberspace trying to spread and increase the control of the activities that take place on the Internet».
The meeting, since its [first edition] in 1998 has been opened to everyone with just onerequirement: to share the hacker ethic and attitude, that does not necessarily mean «being able to use a computer», but being willing to go further.
In the opening program we can read: «our being "hackers" comes out in every day life also when we are not using computers; it emerges when we fight to changewhat we don’t like, such as false and imposed information, the use of non-accessible and expensive technologies, the reception of information without interaction and the passive withstanding of the introduction of repressive and censorious technologies (...) we are genuinely scared by the rapidity with which technology becomes linked to social control, wars, and a noxious and schizophrenic fear of other people. Our approach is completely different.»
The meeting hosted seminars, presentations, workshops and moments of informal exchange, wi-fi scavenger hunts, copyleft music events, bicycle laboratories, the capanne dei suchi (spaces for meetings and debates), and more than 30 workshops for any kind of audience, computer technicians and not.
