Objectives:
- Investigate the disciplines emerging from technological research
- Research new ways of interaction between the digital and the physical world
- Sensitize the users to the responsible employment of new technologies
Areas of Interest:
Physical computing, interaction design, hardware hacking and biological computation.
Origin and History:
Taming Technology - Addomesticare la Tecnologia was an event that included DJ sets, installations, workshops and different meetings aimed at the exploration of the territory through music, art and new media.
The event took place on the 22nd and 23rd of April 2011 at the Associazione Culturale Nub in Montale (PT) and in Florence on the 29th and 30th of April at the historical prison complex Le Murate and at the Club Cargo
The project, that was organized by Switch – Creative Social Network in collaboration with Associazione Culturale Nub and Tempo Reale, investigated emerging disciplines, such as physical computing, interaction design, hardware hacking or biological computation, with a common interest for the research of new interaction modalities between digital and physical world.
The conceptual background of Taming Technology is based on the awareness that the acceleration withstood by the technological evolution causes increasing difficulties for the users, who often cannot understand the main aspects of the technology they use. Such a context arises a question: “which machines could be preys and which one could be predators?” [1]
Taming Technology makes reference to domestication, the process through which human beings render animals and plants subdued to their interests thanks to the use of the technology they developed, to highlight that nowadays this relationship seems to be overturned.
At present time artists and designers “are increasingly looking at the natural environment in search of ways to turn untamed machines into instruments capable of serving human needs”. And “while the potential of new inventions is being explored, other devices on the verge of extinction find unprecedented applications in the hands of individuals capable of redesigning them to interact and compete with newer generations of appliances. Hybrid artefacts are being breaded by crossing digital computers, organic life forms and old analog machines.” [1]
This has generated the need to give sense to this scenario not only through scientific and engineering competences, but also through art. The question on which Taming Technology wants to draw people’s attention is: What art form do we need to tame technology?[1]
